Bence Bicsák: “For me, the glass is always half full!”

How did you feel when you heard that the Olympics were being postponed?

I admit that at first I felt sad and disappointed, because I have to wait another year for my childhood dream, and a year is a long time. I feel like a long cycle would have been perfect this summer, but I can't think about that now. I have to look ahead and stay as positive as possible in every aspect. There will be no lack of motivation, I can also enjoy unexpected situations.

Apart from the Olympics, what competitions of yours have been affected by the current situation?

The first World Championship race, which was supposed to be in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of March, has already been postponed. Unfortunately, all my other races have been postponed, and the calendar is currently empty. So it's quite difficult to prepare. There will probably be a lot of races in the fall, when I should rest. It's not an easy situation, that's for sure.

How do you continue your preparation, how much do your training and workload change?

The situation hasn't changed that much for now, as I mostly train alone during the day. However, there is no swimming pool, no track, and there is a lot of uncertainty. I will probably have to take a break, especially if the main season is in the fall, because otherwise it will be difficult to make it to the end. Fortunately, I know places in Pécs where not even a bird goes, so I will definitely be able to exercise, and since sports are my profession, I hope it won't be a problem if I train alone somewhere on the highway.

How can you replace your swimming workouts?

Right now I can only do land-based training, but as soon as time allows and it's possible, I'll go into the lakes, because that can't be done for a long time. Years of hard work can be wasted, because swimming is something that an elite athlete should always do.

What has changed in your days, how does your day go?

Not much has changed so far, I train like an animal, now I'm trying to get myself pumped up, as if I were competing. I've been training continuously since September, it would be terrible to go on a break without any "results", so I'm going to do tests, compete with myself.

What keeps you enthusiastic?

Honestly, I don't know how I can still be so enthusiastic. Every time I can exercise, I'm glad that I can still do it today. And of course, I really love working out, it's my greatest happiness. For me, the glass is always half full!
