The Pécs Brewery Premium Wheat Beer was chosen as the fourth best out of more than 1,400 beers, and ultimately proved to be the most popular wheat beer in the overall competition at the international Golden Beer Seal competition held in České Budějovice.
More than 1,400 products from 271 breweries competed in 38 categories at the 31st Gold Brewer's Seal competition in the Czech Republic. According to the jury's assessment, Pécsi Prémium Búza won a silver medal in the wheat beer category, and then came fourth as the best foreign beer in the competition organized among the top three places in all categories, and received a special award.
Pécsi Premium Wheat, which also proved to be the best in the September wheat beer blind test, owes its success, among other things, to the open vat fermentation used by the Brewery. Experience shows that open vat fermentation can produce more pronounced flavors and aromas, and the end result will have a more complex flavor, which is particularly well suited to Bavarian-style wheat beer.
A few years ago, the Department of Brewing and Spirits of Szent István University participated in the development of the recipe for Pécs Premium Wheat, led by Dr. Beáta Hegyesné, who has since become the research and development director of the Pécs Brewery, and Dániel Koren, a student of the department, who now manages production at the Brewery as a brewmaster. Regarding wheat beer, minor changes have been made to the beer recipe in recent times based on sensory reviews and consumer feedback.
Recent recognitions show that the changes have been made in the right direction, and the results of Pécsi Sörfőzde's pursuit of high quality were confirmed in the Czech competition.
