The company was acquired by the Szemerey family, who are committed to organic crop production. From that point on, the brewery has been classified as a small-scale brewery in accordance with EEC Directive 92/83.
The company was acquired by the Austrian Ottakringer Group, who modernized production through a series of investments and developments.
Szalon is the oldest registered Hungarian beer brand, first recorded with the Chamber of Industry in 1907. Since then, Pécsi Brewery has remained faithful to the original recipe, as tradition and quality are timeless values for us.
The foundations of the Pécsi Brewery were laid in 1848 by merchant Leopold Hirschfeld, who sought to turn grain not only into commercial value but also into an experience. He introduced numerous innovations, including in the brewing of lager beers.
Interestingly, brewing was already taking place on the site of today’s brewery as early as the 14th century. According to the City Archives, a Franciscan monastery once stood here, where monks began brewing — a tradition that even continued during the Turkish occupation.
Pécsi Brewery was founded in the mid-19th century by Lipót Hirschfeld and has been operating without interruption ever since. In 2017, it returned to Hungarian ownership and has since been operating as a craft brewery. We place great emphasis on quality, innovation, and continuous development. Our mission is to further enrich Hungarian beer culture while honoring our legacy of more than 170 years.
